My Take on Health Care
I've been watching the political talking heads for months now, the dems are pro and the repubs. are against ANYTHING the dems want. I'm getting real damned irritated with my elected officials. Here are MY facts:
Because the DG spent 18 months hunting N. Vietnamese in the army, the Veterans Administration is taking admirable care of his health. Now understand that 30 years ago, they told him that he "wasn't in a war and didn't deserve VA care". But that is another post for another day. Right now they take good care of him. My insurance, after much dickering and delay and protests, pays 80% of what they deem reasonable, after a $2500.00 deductible is satisfied.
I am healthy right now and grateful. The fine coverage outlined above costs us about $8000.00 each year. We can afford to pay the price of this lousy private insurance. The elected talking heads, incidentally covered by a fine "public pay for" health care plan, insist that this is a political problem. They insist that public health care will "cost too much". Do they think that it is free now? Lord almighty save me from politicians. Health care cost my household $10,000.00 every year. I could pay more taxes if I didn't have to line insurance company pockets with $10,000.00 of my money.
EVERY OTHER DEVELOPED COUNTRY ON EARTH HAS ONE FORM OR ANOTHER OF PUBLIC "SINGLE PAYER" HEALTH CARE. What are we, stupid? Evidently so, cause we continue to allow guys and a couple girls, who by the way do NOT share the expense or miserable insurance company directed care, to tell us that every single one of us does not deserve health care.
The time has come for those of us who work every day and comprise what used to be called the middle class (another rant for another day) to exercise our power. It IS cheaper for medicare to cover everybody, (btw - they run Medicare on 3% overhead, think about that.) than for all of us to pay insurance companies to #1 - MAKE MONEY, #2 - Grow and #3, or 4 or last - take care of their customers (insureds) at the lowest possible cost. Has to be the lowest possible cost, see #1. As you try to get your mind around this, keeping mind that our national elected officials don't have to deal with this dilemma. They have GREAT insurance that they do not pay for, we do.
Speaking of paying for health care, if we take the cap off of payroll taxes and let the higher earners continue to pay into medicare and social security, the problem goes away. Do ya think they'd miss a meal? I do not.

BIRD FARM SOUTH

Although the issue is imminently more complicated than it seems, overall I agree with you that having some kind of universal health care coverage is the way to go. And it's coming, with or without Republican support it seems. However, I still have some concerns about what's coming, such as the fines for people who still don't have insurance once it's rolled out and what's really going to be covered. I wish the politicians would have done the right thing and let a group of health care professionals set it up instead.

Nice post! Don't even get me started on the health care thing!
By the way... I read your crochet post. What a beautiful coat! So talented! All I've crocheted was a blanket.
